Best Time to Trade EUR/USD
EUR/USD is deepest from 13:00 to 17:00 UTC in winter (8:00 AM–12:00 PM New York). In summer the same local hours are 12:00 to 16:00 UTC. That is the only four-hour block when both European and US dollar desks are fully staffed.
One window, two clocks
If you can only watch one stretch of the day, take the London–New York overlap. Spreads on liquid retail books are commonly tightest here, and US data (08:30 ET releases) lands at the start of the window. Outside it, EUR/USD is still tradable — it is just a different tempo.

EUR/USD through the day
Winter UTC. Shift the UTC column one hour earlier during the summer period described in the 2026 daylight-saving guide.
| UTC | What is open | EUR/USD character |
|---|---|---|
| 22:00–00:00 | Sydney only | Wide spread, gap risk on Sunday |
| 00:00–07:00 | Tokyo, late Sydney | Slow range; Europe has not priced the day |
| 07:00–08:00 | Pre-London | European banks start pricing; range often breaks |
| 08:00–12:00 | London cash | Main European trend window; ECB headlines land here |
| 13:00–17:00 | London + New York | Tightest spreads, US data, highest participation |
| 16:00 | WMR fix (London) | Short burst of fixing flow, especially month-end |
| 17:00–21:00 | New York afternoon | Still active after data, then fades into the roll |
| 21:00–22:00 | Late New York | Skip new entries; spreads widen into the close |
London open, 08:00 local
Frankfurt, Paris and London cash markets come online together. EUR/USD frequently leaves the Asian range in the first 60–90 minutes. That move is real liquidity, not a Sunday gap, which is why many day traders mark 07:00–08:00 London as their start rather than midnight.
08:30 New York data
Nonfarm payrolls, CPI and retail sales are scheduled at 08:30 ET, which is 13:30 UTC in winter and 12:30 UTC in US daylight time. Spreads can jump for seconds around the print. Standing aside for a few minutes is a liquidity choice, not a view on direction.
16:00 London fix
The WMR 16:00 London benchmark pulls benchmarked asset-manager flow into EUR/USD, louder on month-end and quarter-end. During British Summer Time the fix is 15:00 UTC. It sits inside the overlap, so the book is already deep when that flow arrives.
Hours that waste the spread
Sunday’s first hour, the Tokyo lunch lull, and the last hour before Friday’s 17:00 New York close. EUR/USD can still tick, but the cost of crossing the spread eats a larger share of a small range. The pair-agnostic version of this map is the best-time guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to trade EUR/USD?
13:00–17:00 UTC in winter (8:00 AM–12:00 PM New York, 1:00–5:00 PM London). In summer, with both cities on daylight time, that local window is 12:00–16:00 UTC.
Is the Asian session good for EUR/USD?
For ranges, yes. From Sydney until about 07:00 London the pair often oscillates. Systems that need a directional break usually wait for the London cash open.
What time is the London fix for EUR/USD?
16:00 London time. That is 16:00 UTC in winter and 15:00 UTC during British Summer Time. Flow often builds in the half hour before the fix, especially at month-end.
Which weekdays are best?
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday usually carry the cleanest European and US overlap. Monday inherits the weekend gap. Friday liquidity fades after the morning US data and is thin after 16:00 New York.
