Best Time to Trade Gold (XAU/USD)
Spot gold is busiest when London bullion and New York futures are both open: roughly 13:00–17:00 UTC in winter. Two gold-specific clocks sit inside or beside that window — the LBMA auctions at 10:30 and 15:00 London, and US data at 08:30 New York.
Three clocks, not one session
Forex session names still apply, but XAU/USD also answers to the London bullion auctions and to COMEX liquidity. If you only need to know whether the quote is live, use Is gold open?. This page is about which hours inside that open actually have depth.

Where gold volume actually sits
London bullion
The LBMA Gold Price auction runs at 10:30 and 15:00 London time on London business days. In winter those prints are 10:30 and 15:00 UTC. During British Summer Time they are 09:30 and 14:00 UTC. The afternoon auction falls inside the forex overlap, which is why 15:00 London is the single most watched minute on many XAU/USD desks.
The wider London gold session is the cash day around those auctions, not a separate exchange open.
New York futures
COMEX gold trades nearly around the clock on CME Globex, with a daily halt near 17:00–18:00 New York. The hours that matter for spot XAU/USD are the US morning: economic releases at 08:30 ET, and the period when London is still staffed. Details of the futures day are on the New York gold hours page.
A retail XAU/USD quote is a dealer price linked to that futures and bullion flow. It can keep ticking after London banks have gone home; it should not be treated as the same book.
A practical day for XAU/USD
Winter UTC. Move London events one hour earlier in UTC during British Summer Time.
| UTC | Event | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| 22:00–00:00 | Sunday open / Sydney | Gaps and wide spreads. Poor place for size. |
| 00:00–07:00 | Tokyo hours | Can trend on risk headlines; often a drift. Shanghai hours add bursts, not a full London book. |
| 10:30 | LBMA morning auction | First institutional gold print of the London day. |
| 12:30 / 13:30 | 08:30 ET data | CPI, NFP and claims. Summer print is 12:30 UTC; winter print is 13:30 UTC. |
| 13:00–17:00 | London + New York | Deepest spot book of the day in winter. |
| 15:00 | LBMA afternoon auction | Benchmark flow. Spreads can flicker during the auction itself. |
| 21:00–22:00 | Into the New York halt | Liquidity leaves. Many futures books pause near 17:00 ET. |

Is the Asian session bad for gold?
It is thinner than London, not empty. Shanghai trading hours and risk-off headlines can move XAU/USD more than they move EUR/USD. Treat it as a separate session with wider spreads, not as a dead chart.
